Wells Fargo exports transactions through Download Account Activity, under the Accounts tab, as a spreadsheet or a Quicken Web Connect file for personal accounts (Wells Fargo (opens in a new tab)). The download covers the last 90 days by default, and up to 18 months for certain account types. Business accounts can also download for QuickBooks (Web Connect); for older periods, convert the PDF statement with PDF to QBO or the free bank statement converter.

Personal accounts: Download Account Activity

Wells Fargo's account activity FAQ says you can download your account activity into a spreadsheet or into Quicken Web Connect (Wells Fargo (opens in a new tab)). The steps it gives:

  1. Sign on to Wells Fargo Online.
  2. Open Download Account Activity under the Accounts tab.
  3. Complete the required information and choose the time frame.
  4. Select Download.

By default the download captures the last 90 days. For certain types of accounts, up to 18 months may be available when you choose the time frame.

Separately, the FAQ lists how much account activity you can view online for each account type:

Account type History you can view online
Checking, savings, money market Up to 18 months
Line of credit, installment loan Up to 24 months
Credit card Up to 90 days or 300 transactions

The personal FAQ names a spreadsheet and Quicken Web Connect. QuickBooks wording appears on Wells Fargo's Business Online pages.

Business accounts: QuickBooks Web Connect

On Wells Fargo Business Online, you select the Download Account Activity link on the Account Services page to download into Quicken, QuickBooks (Web Connect) or a spreadsheet (Wells Fargo (opens in a new tab)). As for personal accounts, the default is the last 90 days, and up to 18 months may be available.

Wells Fargo's QuickBooks page says to choose the QuickBooks (Web Connect) option and click Download (Wells Fargo (opens in a new tab)). It says Web Connect launches QuickBooks, downloads the data into your check register, and matches transactions you have already entered. The first time you download with Web Connect for an account, you are asked whether to "Use an existing QuickBooks account" or "Create a new QuickBooks account."

Wells Fargo's page describes importing a saved file through the File menu, then Import, then From Web Connect. Intuit's current QuickBooks Desktop help gives Banking, then Bank Feeds, then Import Web Connect Files (Intuit (opens in a new tab)).

How long online statements stay available

Wells Fargo's Business Online page says the time Online Statements are available to view and download depends on the product (Wells Fargo (opens in a new tab)):

  • up to 12 months for auto loans
  • up to 2 years for credit cards, home equity lines of credit, and personal loans and lines of credit
  • up to 7 years for deposit accounts, home mortgage accounts, and trust and managed investment accounts

So for a deposit account, statements can reach back further than the 18 months of downloadable activity.

Older periods: convert the PDF statement

When the period you need is older than the activity download reaches, download the online statement for that period, if your product still has it. Download it, then convert it:

Check the result before importing. The QBO file validator checks a QBO, QFX or OFX file's structure, dates, amounts and transaction IDs.

A converted file is not the same as a Wells Fargo download. Quicken says it does not support QFX files created by third-party conversion software, such as PDF-to-QFX conversion (Quicken (opens in a new tab)). Intuit's partner pages say Web Connect is directly associated with a contracted Intuit BID (Branding ID) (Intuit (opens in a new tab)). This guide cannot promise that QuickBooks or Quicken will accept a converted file. See QuickBooks unable to verify financial institution if Desktop refuses one.

Converting with StatementLoom

StatementLoom reads text PDF statements, the kind you download from online banking, and refuses scanned or photographed ones. It checks that the opening balance plus every transaction equals the closing balance, and only then lets you export. In QBO, QFX and OFX files each transaction gets a fixed ID (FITID), so exporting the same statement again gives the same IDs, and StatementLoom warns when two statements for the same account overlap.

The free bank statement converter reads up to 10 pages per visitor in a rolling 24 hours without an account and downloads Excel, CSV or Xero CSV. QBO, QFX and OFX downloads need a free account.
