HSBC CSV statement: how to download transactions as CSV
HSBC UK statements download as PDF, but the transactions list exports CSV or Excel. Steps, business options, and older periods.
On this page
HSBC UK's digital statements download as PDF files; other formats, such as CSV or Excel (xls), are downloaded from your transactions list instead (HSBC UK (opens in a new tab)). You set the date range with Search and filter, click Download at the bottom of the list, and choose the format. For a period you only have as a PDF statement, convert it with bank statement to CSV or the free bank statement converter.
Download HSBC transactions as CSV
HSBC UK's statements help page describes these steps for a CSV or Excel download from the transactions list (HSBC UK (opens in a new tab)):
- In your transactions list, select Search and filter and set the date range, amount or keyword.
- Scroll to the bottom of the transaction list and click Download.
- Choose the format for your download,
CSVor Excel (xls), and select Continue.
The help page we checked does not give a date limit for this download.

HSBC statements are PDF
HSBC UK says you can view old statements up to 6 years back in online or mobile banking (HSBC UK (opens in a new tab)). You can download a statement in PDF format in the mobile banking app or in online banking, to share or print at home.
So statements reach back up to 6 years, but as PDFs. If the transactions list download does not cover the month you need, the PDF statement is the starting point.
HSBC business accounts
HSBC UK's Business Internet Banking help says that for business current and savings accounts, you can view at least 6 years of statements (HSBC UK (opens in a new tab)). It also lists these download options:
- Quicken, QuickBooks and Microsoft Money, with support for the 2003 to 2006 versions of Quicken and QuickBooks and all versions of Microsoft Money
- file formats that work with popular spreadsheet and database programs
The business mobile app has its own limits (HSBC UK (opens in a new tab)):
- transaction history for up to 12 months for GBP accounts, and the last 30 days for credit card or foreign currency accounts
- sterling current and savings account statements as PDFs for up to the last 6 years
- credit card statements, or statements in a different format, through Business Internet Banking rather than the app
Older periods: convert the PDF statement
When the month you need is beyond the transaction history, download the PDF statement and convert it:
- Download the PDF statement from online or mobile banking.
- Upload it to bank statement to CSV.
- Review any row the balance check flags, then download a CSV, Excel or Xero CSV file.
If you already have an HSBC CSV but need it in the QuickBooks Online or Xero layout, the bank CSV cleaner reshapes it. It detects the delimiter and comma decimals, and asks for the date order when it is ambiguous.
HSBC statements and Xero in the UK
Xero says PDF bank statement imports are currently only available in Xero organisations in Canada and the United States (Xero Central (opens in a new tab)). So a UK Xero organisation cannot import an HSBC PDF statement directly.
Xero's global help says PDF bank statements can't be imported, and suggests exporting the transactions from online banking, usually available when you view the transactions as a list (Xero Central (opens in a new tab)). That matches HSBC's route above. The same page says Xero supports OFX, QFX, QIF, CSV and QuickBooks file formats.
For older months, a converted CSV in Xero's layout is one option. See the Xero CSV template guide and PDF bank statement to Xero.
Converting with StatementLoom
StatementLoom reads text PDF statements, the kind you download from online banking, and refuses scanned or photographed ones. It reads day-first dates and amounts in pounds, and writes CSV dates as DD/MM/YYYY for statements in any currency other than US dollars.
It checks that the opening balance plus every transaction equals the closing balance, and that each printed running balance follows from the one before. You can only export once the statement reconciles. The free bank statement converter reads up to 10 pages per visitor in a rolling 24 hours without an account, and its statements are deleted within an hour.
