QuickBooks unable to verify financial institution: fixes
What the QuickBooks Desktop Web Connect error about verifying the financial institution means, the fixes Intuit lists, and what to try if it persists.
On this page
QuickBooks Desktop can show this message when you import a Web Connect (.qbo) file. Intuit's fixes are to use a supported version of QuickBooks Desktop, sign in to your Intuit Account in QuickBooks, and ask your bank to confirm your accounts are set up for Web Connect (Intuit (opens in a new tab)). None of these is guaranteed to work. If the error persists, check the file with the QBO file validator and look at the options at the end of this page.
The exact message
Intuit lists this error in its QuickBooks Desktop help on Web Connect import errors (Intuit (opens in a new tab)):
"QuickBooks is unable to verify the Financial Institution information for this download."
Intuit says Web Connect issues can happen for several reasons, like incomplete bank files or incompatible formats, and that changes from your bank can also create issues.
Intuit's partner pages add context. They say Web Connect is directly associated with a contracted Intuit BID (Branding ID), and that Web Connect needs a contract with Intuit or the bank's OFX or online banking provider (Intuit (opens in a new tab)).
Check a QBO, QFX or OFX file
See whether a bank file is well formed before you import it: dates, amounts, transaction IDs and the account block. Free, no account, nothing stored.
When it appears: discontinued versions
QuickBooks Desktop 2023 was discontinued after May 31, 2026. That includes Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus and Enterprise Solutions 23.0, among others (Intuit (opens in a new tab)). On a discontinued version you can't download transactions, and Intuit says uploading transactions is discontinued too.
Intuit says the exact error depends on your download method, and gives this example for discontinued versions: "QuickBooks Desktop is unable to verify the Financial Institution Information for this download." Existing Desktop Plus and Desktop Enterprise subscribers receive version 2024 at no extra cost as part of their annual plan.
QuickBooks Desktop Plus 2024 and Desktop Enterprise 24.0 were Intuit's final annual platform releases (Intuit (opens in a new tab)). Current subscribers get new features and improvements during the year instead of installing a new version.
The fixes Intuit lists
Intuit lists these fixes (Intuit (opens in a new tab)):
- Use a supported version of QuickBooks Desktop.
- Sign in to your Intuit Account. Importing a
.qbofile requires you to sign in within QuickBooks Desktop. If you use Advanced Mode in bank feeds, you may need to sign in or switch modes: from Banking, hover over Bank Feeds and select Change Bank Feeds Mode. - Ask your bank to make sure your QuickBooks accounts are set up for Web Connect.
- Check the file type. A
.qbofile is the only type Web Connect can read.
On Windows, import the file again from Banking, then Bank Feeds, then Import Web Connect Files (Intuit (opens in a new tab)).
If you see an OL code instead, such as OL-222, see QuickBooks error OL-222.
Quicken shows a similar message
Quicken for Windows has its own article on a similar message about verifying financial institution information (Quicken (opens in a new tab)). It gives these reasons:
- The system date is incorrect.
- The release of Quicken is not supported by the financial institution.
- The financial institution information is incorrect or missing.
- The financial institution may not support that account type.
For Quicken 2017 and older, Quicken says the connected services have been discontinued and the error can't be resolved without upgrading to the Subscription Release. One step in its fix is to select Financial Institution Branding and Profile from a list and click Refresh.
Quicken also says it does not support QFX files created by third-party conversion software, such as PDF-to-QFX conversion (Quicken (opens in a new tab)). See QFX file.
If the error persists
Try QuickBooks Online. Intuit lists QuickBooks Online among the products that support Web Connect (Intuit (opens in a new tab)). In QuickBooks Online, go to All apps, then Accounting, then Bank transactions, open the Link account dropdown, and choose Upload from file (Intuit (opens in a new tab)). Intuit's US help says the file must be 350 KB or less, and a .qbo upload can have up to 1,000 lines. This is a different import route, not a guaranteed fix.
Batch entry in Enterprise or Accountant. Only QuickBooks Enterprise and QuickBooks Accountant Desktop support batch entering transactions from Excel or CSV files into bank and credit card registers (Intuit (opens in a new tab)).
Check the file. The QBO file validator checks the header, sign-on, account blocks, dates, amounts and transaction IDs, and names the transactions affected. A file that passes can still be refused for the reasons above.
If you only have a PDF. StatementLoom builds a .qbo file from a text PDF statement, not a scan, once the opening balance plus every transaction equals the closing balance (PDF to QBO). QBO downloads need a free account; the free converter gives Excel or CSV without one. The import rules above still apply, so QuickBooks may refuse the file.
