PDF to OFX

PDF statements to OFX, with the balances proven

Download a standard OFX file, which Xero and QuickBooks Online can import. Each file carries the statement’s closing balance and stable transaction IDs, and only exists once the transactions tie out to the statement’s balances.

How it works

  1. 01

    Upload the PDF statement

  2. 02

    Check the balance proof

  3. 03

    Download the .ofx file

Checked before you download

Opening balance plus every transaction must equal the closing balance, and every printed running balance must follow from the row above. If anything is off, you see the exact rows, not a silently wrong file.

Stable transaction IDs

Each transaction gets the same ID every time you export the same statement, so finance software that skips IDs it has already seen does not import it twice.

Bank and card accounts

Checking and savings statements export as bank accounts, credit-card statements as card accounts, with charges as money out and payments as money in.

Deleted after 24 hours

Uploads and everything read from them are deleted automatically 24 hours after upload (or after 7 or 30 days if your workspace chooses), or right away when you click delete. Your statements are never used to train AI models.

Where an OFX file goes

  • Xero supports OFX, QFX, QIF, CSV and QuickBooks files and recommends OFX where possible; it says OFX files import without changes to the bank’s export file (Xero Central). Xero recognises transactions already imported from other files and leaves them out (Xero Central).
  • QuickBooks Online accepts .ofx files through Upload from file, up to 1,000 lines per upload (Intuit).
  • QuickBooks Desktop reads only .qbo files through Web Connect, so use the PDF to QBO export instead.
  • Quicken uses QFX (Web Connect) files (Quicken); see PDF to QFX for what Quicken says about converted files.

Inside the file

OFX is a published banking specification (FDX: OFX Banking Specification 2.3). Each transaction carries a posting date, a signed amount and an ID the bank assigns (FITID); the specification says FITIDs must be unique within an account and exist so software can detect duplicates. Amounts are signed from the customer’s point of view, so a card purchase is negative and a card payment positive. StatementLoom writes the closing balance into the file’s ledger balance. To check a file you already have, use the free OFX validator; to turn one into a spreadsheet, use OFX to CSV.
